Welcome to the book club..pt2

Ok, just so you don't get bored of all these pictures of Italy (because there will be more) ill break it up a little with another installment of 'Welcome to the book club'....

Big collection of Irvine Welsh, I know Train Spotting is the classic but Filth is my favorite. Its about a detective investigating a crime but soon takes a very odd turn. Got some good Will Self in there, Great Apes was good. It's about an artist who wakes up one day and everybody (including himself) is a monkey... everything is the same but we are all monkeys. So it's really about him adjusting to this, is he mad?, was he mad to think he was a human? who knows? We also have some Huxley in there, Brave New World telling us we are all screwed.

Every adult should have Harry Potter: The complete works, I'm sure you all know what the deal is with these books. Got me some Verne in there, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea is a classic and still one of my fav's. Even have Yann Martel's Life of Pi in there, not got round to reading this yet but I do like Pi...Yum!

As you can tell, this is the boy's section of book shelf. Got Frank Miller's Sin City books, its a great collection of stories all set in Basin city. The film recreated some of the storys very well but I still recommend you go out and get the rest. Batman Hush by Loeb, Lee and Williams is probably one of the best Batman storys around. Lots of mystry and double crossing all mixed in with most of the best know charecters results in a great book. Got the three The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen books by Allan Moore & Kevin O'neill. The first is by far the best of the three blending great characters from famous literature with a great story.... and avoid the film at all costs.

Welcome to the book club..pt1

While doing all the painting and clean over the past couple of weeks, we finally got round to sorting out reading area and bookcases. We have a ton of books but when we sorted through them I realised there were looks of book I had not read yet, forgot we had or meant to recommend.

So what better way to help remind me of what we have (and help you pick a good holiday read) than to post it here. So expect a few more of these on slow news days... :)

Marilyn Manson's auto-biography The long hard road out of Hell was a good read, everything you would expect and then some. Talks about his childhood and explains a lot about why he is who he is. Devil May Care was so-so, its a Bond novel but written by Sebastian Faulks in the style of Ian Fleming. I like the Bond books but this missed the mark a little, the originals are better. Addict was also a good read, true story of this guy who get sucked in to a cray life of drugs and crime in 60's london, they keep talking about making it into a film but it never seems to happen. The rest belong to the wife and I have not read them, but 'Ugly' & 'A Piece of cake" are those painful lives style books she loves so much....so if your into that those are for you.

Devil in Amber, The Vesuvius Club and Black Butterfly are three great books by Mark Gatiss. He's a British comedian/writer (The Leauge of Gentlemen, Dr Who) with a dark side that come out in the books, Fee and me both liked these books. Think James Bond but written by Oscar Wilde.... highly recommend! Two copies of The Outsider which is a classic book and one of Fee's favorites, guess thats why we have two. Got the screen play of Taxi Driver in there (you talking to me?) and no book collection would be complete without The Da Vinci Code. I must remember to read the Bowie biography someday...

Yes it's true, I can read!

Sometimes I even read those books that don't have pictures in them! Amazing I know, but you just cant beat a good book. So I figured I would let you know what I have been reading and what I made of it.

I just finished 'The Forever War" by Joe Haldeman.

Looks like a Jehovah's witnesses book if you ask me.

Ok, to sum up the story without ruining it for you the basic outline is this.

Man (as in the Human Race) goes into space and finds worm-holes that can transport you all over the universe, we then start to explore space. Once our story teller gets into space they meet Aliens and a big war kicks off, to fight this war the smartest young people on earth are drafted to fight. Lets face it, if your bouncing around in worm holes and flying in space you have to be a little smarter that your normal 'grunt'.

However, when you go thought the worm-holes time is jumps around. The soldiers go off for a year (at least for them) but when they come home 25 years has gone by and home is a very different place. So every time they head off to fight, they lose loved ones and the world changes beyond their wildest dreams.... hence the forever war!

It was a good read, but it was a rather short book for a 'forever war'. It felt like it needed more than was there and I felt it would have read beter if it was done in the form or a solider's diary....because thats what it felt like I was reading.

I would recommend it but it was not the best book I have ever read.
